The Body Mass Index or BMI is an anthropometric index defined as the ratio between the height of an individual in meters and the square of its weight in kilograms. It is therefore clear from the outset that the value obtained from this ratio may be a real indicator of the physical condition of a person not taking into account many other factors such as the percentage of lean mass and body fat, or the type of bone structure or even sex. However, it was demonstrated through several studies that too low or too high values of this index means excessive thinness or obesity. To be more precise, there are also tables used by the World Health Organisation (WHO) associating particular value ranges of body mass index to a specific physical condition:
<15.99: Severe thinness
16.00 to 18.49: Underweight
18.5 to 24.99: Normal weight
25.00 to 29.99 Overweight
From this table we can see that the range of values corresponding to the condition of normal weight ranges from 18.5 to 24.99 and this explains the fact that the formula for calculating body mass index does not take account of sex or level of muscle that would provide a significant weight gain but certainly not indicative of a worrying physical situation. Common values of this index for a good physical condition are:
22: For men
20: For women
The calculator on this site provides the value of body mass index values just entering
height and weight and print a table similar to that seen previously for immediate feedback about the physical state. For all the reasons expressed above, the results provided by this tool is only an 'estimate' and it must not be the basis for important decisions about their health without a previous advice of qualified medical personnel.
